Planning of a new cardiac catheterization laboratory

In the children’s and heart center of the tirol clinics in Innsbruck

Problem definition

On August 1, 2024, the newly planned cardiac catheterization laboratory in the Children’s and Heart Center of the tirol kliniken in Innsbruck was officially opened. Cardiovascular diseases are among the most common diseases in Western Europe, which underlined the need to expand the cardiac catheterization laboratory. The new laboratory makes it possible to reduce waiting times for minimally invasive cardiac procedures. Specifically, it involved the entire planning process of a conversion (approx. 113 m²) using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and a common CDE (Common Data Environment), which concerns five rooms used for medical purposes: duty room, staff toilets, meeting room, archive, sink and staff lounge. The project also includes an approx. 180 m² area in the G6 technical room for the integration of a new ventilation unit and the integration of media.

Our solution

The project faced a number of significant challenges that required careful planning and coordination. A key problem was the extremely limited space, particularly in the ceiling in the corridor area. This limited space made intensive 3D planning and close collaboration with other trades essential to ensure that all the necessary installations and systems could be integrated smoothly.
